O’Zapft is! – The Oktoberfest starts

As you might know I am from Munich, Germany, the home of the original Oktoberfest. It is the world’s biggest seasonal fair and if you haven’t been there yet, you should go.

“O’zapft is!” is Bavarian dialect for “Es ist angezapft” which means “it is tapped”. This is what Munich’s mayor announces on the Oktoberfest’s beginning day exactly at 12:00 pm when he taps the first barrel of beer. Tapping a big wooden barrel is not easy and different mayor have shown different skills.
Current mayor Christian Ude has no problems here: he’s in his 13th year of being mayor …

For me getting to the Oktoberfest was a matter 5 minutes while I still lived in Munich. Now it’s a bit farther and since I can’t make it the second year in a row now, I do miss it.
